Patchman Music offers two complete wind controller soundbanks for the Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8:
Feb 18, 2010 Hello everybody.I'm a music producer who doesn't have the time to tweak sounds all from scratch. I'm looking for patches/presets for download, because I'm tired of the factory ones that came with the Fantom. Install the Fantom-X Editor/Librarian and USB MIDI driver, available at www.rolandus.com. Download the XV-5080 patches. On the Fantom-X, press MENU.
Volume 1: Acoustic Essentials & Leads
Volume 2: Plucked, Vox, & Synth
These all-new soundbanks turn your Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 into a wind controller powerhouse. These professional quality wind controller sounds come from PATCHMAN MUSIC- the leading authority in breath controlled sound design. These soundbanks work superbly controlled by a wind controller such as the Yamaha WX5, WX7, WX11, WindJamm'r, Akai EWI USB, EVI, EWI5000, EWI4000s, Nyle Steiner MIDI EVI and EWI, MDT, nuEVI, or Softwind Synthophone. Keyboardists can also enjoy these highly expressive sounds when used with a Yamaha BC1, BC2, or BC3 plugged directly into a keyboard equipped with a breath controller input (i.e. Yamaha VL70-m) or plugged into a device such as the MIDI Solutions Breath Controller Box or Anatek Wind Machine (out of production). These sounds require a wind controller or breath controller for proper use. These soundbanks are NOT compatible with the Fantom G series, Fantom S series, or any other synth.
These new sounds for the Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 are the result of over 4 years of programming by professional wind controller player / sound designer Matt Traum. They have been programmed specifically for the Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 to take advantage of the new Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 samples and features- they were not simply converted from our previous XV or JV sounds. These are brand new sounds!!
Each soundbank contains 160 of the most expressive sounds available for the Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8. All sounds have been logically organized by type for quick and easy access. If you own a wind controller or breath controller you owe it to yourself to get these top quality soundbanks!
Please Note: These soundbanks have been specially designed for use with a wind controller or breath controller and thus require one of these devices for proper use. These sounds require MIDI continuous controller #2 (breath controller) in order to make any sound. If you do not have a wind controller or breath controller you will probably not be able to use these sounds. |

Patchman Music Fantom XR, X6, X7, & X8 Volume 2
Plucked, Vox, & Synth - The Patchman Music Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 Volume 2 wind controller soundbank contains 128 Patches and 32 Performances programmed by wind controller expert Matt Traum- an experienced wind synthesist and sound designer. Matt has used these sounds in performance for over 4 years. The Patchman Music Volume 2 Soundbank for the Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 takes over where Volume 1 left off. This bank begins with a great collection of plucked and percussive type sounds including a wide variety of guitars, basses, keyboards, and percussion instruments all tweaked to be played with a wind controller. This bank continues on with some outstanding organ lead sounds and vocal type sounds including Take 6 style chords and scat type lead voices. Getting into the heart of this bank you will find a plethora of synth timbres that respond extremely well to your breath expression. All of the classic synth leads are here including those fat Judd-style EWI leads, breathy and bell-type sounds, huge Brecker-inspired analog layers and chords, and so much more. We have also included some ambient patches allowing you to create extremely complex washes of sound. There are looping type sounds that echo what you play allowing you to build up intricate rhythms. There are some clever patches whereby your breath level morphs the sound from a single note into a chord. ...And the Performance bank is truly amazing! All the fat lead sounds are there. And for the first time ever, we have developed a technique that emulates the rotating chord washes that Michael Brecker made so famous. Reiterate a note and you will hear the chord change each time it is played! Up until now, this technique was only available on the very expensive Oberheim Xpander. Now YOU can sound like Michael Brecker with those massive layered chordal washes! These sounds are incredibly fun to play and very inspiring- and very cool! You will definitely turn a few heads with these sounds. All sounds have been logically organized by type for quick and easy access. This is an amazing soundbank that transforms the Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, and X8 into an expressive powerhouse.

Pioneering EVI Player & Member of Blood Sweat & Tears, Bruce Cassidy Comments...'Hey Matt, I installed the sounds and tried them tonight. Played for hours. These are everything that you say! Brilliant programming! Really usable and amazingly responsive sounds. I like that so much care has been taken with the Fantom's FXs. The reverbs and various effects are very appropriate to the sounds. Bravo! These sounds are really playable. I really like the implementation of the variable volume and I like how you've applied it. I'm knocked out Matt - you've done an amazing job. Very kind regards and admiration for tremendous work! Sincerely, Bruce.' - Bruce Cassidy - Pioneering EVI player and Music Director and Trumpeter with Blood Sweat & Tears. Bruce made one of the very first commercial recordings of the EVI with Blood Sweat and Tears on their 'Nuclear Blues' Album. |
Synthophone Inventor Martin Hurni Comments...'Hi Matt. Your sounds for the Fantom XR are just great!! Also the polyphonic capabilities are really stunning! I will definitely promote your sounds at the upcoming Frankfurt Musikmesse. Thank you again, and have a nice weekend to come!' Martin Hurni - Inventor of the Softwind Instruments Synthophone |
Click image to visit Steve's cool 'EVI Zone' wind controller website | EVI Player Steve Anderson Comments...'I just received Volume 2 of this patch series and I now have both Patchman Fantom Banks loaded into my Fantom. First off, the Fantom is a great sound module to begin with. But add Patchman's sound banks and this machine is unbelievably good and the ultimate compliment to the Yamaha VL synths. I know many of us have this module, but this latest batch of patches by Patchman rises to a new level... of awesome wind controller patch-nicity! Clearly, a lot of work went into these banks. The patches are buttery smooth, extremely responsive - and there is quite a bit of variety. Due to the sheer number of Patches in both banks (256 total) as well as 64 'Performances' (mega-Patches!) there is more than I will ever possibly use in a performance. There really is something to suit everyone. The Patches are nicely organized by group too, which is a bonus. I don't know how he did it, but Matt was able to authentically replicate, among other things, many of the signature 'Brecker style' sounds in these banks. I am a huge 'Brecker' fan and these patches are super fast and can accommodate ridiculously complex licks that I couldn't do on other sampler based synths. Even the processor intensive 'Performance' patches seem to handle everything I toss at it without showing any signs of bogging. Sigh. I can't bog down a Roland processor now? Damn. Either I am getting slower, or they are getting faster. I am going to go with the latter explanation...for now. It really is beautiful when a sample synth plays as responsively fast as a VL synth. It might even be faster! The Brecker 'Xpander' patches are particularly fun to play, complete with auto-rotating note intervals. In addition to Brecker, other famous Wind Synthesists get paid respect in these banks, as there are some Judd and Nyle type patches, among others. The chordal stuff is outstanding and there are so many other nice touches that this review would go on and on if I detailed them all. To conclude, the Fantom has really weathered the times well and remains one of the best gigging investments I have ever made. With Matt's recent patches this module might be in my rack for quite a while. If you want a synth module that can do it all, with responsiveness on par with an analog synth, then get a Fantom XR with Matt's wind controller patches. Today I spent most of the morning setting up special banks on my memory card for my gig at the beach next weekend. Can't wait to play them and get the band member reactions!' Steve Anderson - EVI Performer / Specialist |
'Oh man, you've really done it this time! I was digging the flutes so much, then I got to Patch 5 and the clarinet just blew my socks off, and I had to start this email to tell ya!!! 'OVERTONE!' nice! I better start recording with this one. I think it's my new sound. Nice trumpets, trombones, combo patches. One thing I'm noticing is every patch is very sensitive- playing will full dynamic range has a nice feel. WELL DONE MATT! BRAVO and all that jazz. Your patches inspire me :) :) :) :) :) :) Just for the record, after playing your new patches, the Fantom is now my #1 favorite synth! Have a great day !!!' - Erik Klein, Synthophone Master
'OMG!! The Xpander-esque rotating Brecker chords in Volume 2 are freakin' amazing!!! I've wanted to do those types of sounds ever since hearing Michael Brecker do them in the 80s. Thank you SO MUCH for making this magical sound happen!. I can't believe you figured out a way to do this on the Roland!'
'I've been working with Matt Traum's new patches for the Roland Fantom XR synth for the past two weeks and must say they are all very good if not amazing! Matt said he focused on patches that emulate 'real' instruments in his comments about this new set of patches and I have to say he was totally successful! All the woodwind (flutes, oboes, english horn, bassoon, clarinets, and saxes) patches are outstanding. Felt like I had become Eddie Daniels in a 3+ hour practice session yesterday (lost track of time the patches were so great!). This was a great investment for me... as I use my EWI/WX5 controllers for my solo work, where I've found my audience is much more engaged with me playing multiple 'instruments' on my gigs.. (flugelhorn, trumpet, clarinet, bone, etc..) along with my alto & tenor saxes. Matt's work on this new set added some greatly improved patches, when compared to my Roland XV-5050 patches (I will continue to use the 5050.. but the Fantom XR patches will become primary voices in most cases). Bottom-line... I highly recommend Matt's patches for the Roland Fantom XR!!'
'Matt, I wanted to tell you that the patches for the Fantom are fantastic, I've already had two gigs using the Fantom XR and your patches. I'll definitely be getting Vol. 2 soon! Thanks.'
'Hello Matt, Simply great sounds; much fun playing with them. A real pleasure doing business with you. Thank you very much.'
'Matt, I really like the Lyle Vox performance on the Fantom XR. I want to play 'Yolanda, You Learn' by Pat Metheny with my band and that's gonna come in handy when I'm trying to copy Lyle and Pedro Aznar... these sounds are worth every penny I paid for them. Good show.'
'Hi Matt, Thanks a lot for sending the banks so quick, I had no problem to load them into the Fantom XR and all patches are worth each $$$. I have already bought banks for the Oberheim Matrix 6r, your Turbo VL Chip, the Akai EWI4000s bank and now the banks for the Fantom XR and it is always a great pleasure to play those patches (to be honest I got the Fantom XR yesterday and I could not wait more to have your banks). Many thanks and again thanks for your hard work giving Wind Controller player expressive patches. Kind regards.'
'The Performances are amazing. If you want strings, there are a couple of string section Performance patches that my first impression is telling me are better than any single voice string patch I've played.'
'Hi Matt, Thanks for the [Fanton XR] Soundbanks, they are really fantastic! I'm having so much fun with them. Thanks!'
'Matt, I played with the new patches as soon as I loaded them and I must tell you that they are 'fresh' and vibrant and they give a new direction to go for wind synth players. They make the SonicCell an even better investment for those thinking of buying one and for those that have one already. I spend most of my time in Mexico and wind controllers are not accessable or used much at all and people are amazed by the sounds that come from your patches and especialy these new ones for SonicCell. Thanks again for your work and please keep it up and I'm looking forward to even more for the SonicCell in the future. Another plus is your very good instructions for loading. Not all of us are puter geeks but you make it easy and enjoyable.'
'Just loaded the Vol. 1 patches! They sound great! Please send me the Vol. 2 patches. Wow. I will never buy another module from anywhere but Patchman! Thanks for taking care of your customers! Thanks Matt! Look forward to playing the new patches.'
'I ordered your sounds for the Fantom XR two weeks ago -- they're just terrific and I'm really enjoying them very much. Great job! Thank you very much!'
'I've been using Matt's patches on a variety of my synths for quite some time. Most recently I've picked up his SonicCell and Fantom XR volumes (1&2). They are wonderfully expressive and I am getting a bunch of positive feedback on the quality of the sounds. Thanks Matt!'
'Holy cow! These patches are great.'
'Matt, I purchased a Fantom XR and a SonicCell from Patchman Music recently. Wonderful beyond words!! OBVIOUSLY, I need Volume 2 now that it is available. Thanks much!!'
'Matt, The sounds are amazing! The sample recordings on your website don't do them justice. I'm stunned at what an improvement they are over the XV-2020 sounds, which were also very good. And the Brecker-like Xpander performances are just fantastic. I wasn't sure whether to make the upgrade from the xV-2020 to the Fantom XR, but I'm glad I did. Your work is outstanding. Thanks again.'
'The multi-voice 'Performances' in the SonicCell are just too much fun to be believed. Just wandering through the options I found 'section' sound after 'section' sound that had me thumbing through the Real Books for the Work Song chart. Just what the doctor ordered to be a one man horn section in a rock group. But then came the string performances and I was turning the pages looking for a ballad, any ballad. Wow!'
'Now that I'm getting into the swing of using it, the XR is wonderful to play on. Thank you so much for this patch-work! Hopefully I'll be able to use this in my college's Jazz band this year. Cheers.'
'Good Morning Matt, I have been using my new Roland Fantom XR for a couple of weeks now and I've got to tell you, the Sax and Brass Section Patches are amazing!'
'Well... first performance with the new Roland Fantom XR and Matt's patches.... done. Man, what a great experience!!!! I ended up using only 4 patches for the 2-hour gig... about 75% using the 'Clarinet1' patch... 15% the 'Harmonica1' patch... and the other 10% using the '<<PAT>>' and 'Mangione' patches on my VL70-m w/Turbo chip. Bluesette played with your Harmonica patch is an absolute KILLER patch. And the Clarinet (aka Eddie Daniels) patch is THE MOST RESPONSIVE patch I've ever played! When I play with that patch... I can't help but play well! Man... this is some great work you did!!! Thanks...sure is adding to my performance quality!'

I tried to install it but it did not work.
Next I ran through this process that tells Windows that it can install unsigned drivers.
http://en.code-bude.net/2015/08/19/how- ... indows-10/
In my Fantom X driver archive I found and edited the RDIF1045.inf file
Change [Roland.NTamd64.6.2] so it looks like this:
[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]
;; Windows10
%RDID0045DeviceDesc%=RDID0045Install, USBVID_0582&PID_006D ; FANTOM-X
Roland Fantom X6 For Sale
(essentially, I just changed the Windows8 to Windows10 and left the rest of the file alone)
Don't run the installer again...instead do it manually...........
Next I plugged in the Fantom to the USB port, opened the Device Manager, and manually installed the driver by pointing it to the directory holding all the Fantom X driver files.
1. Plug in your Fantom via USB.
2. Right click the start button and choose device manager.
3. Locate your Fantom X, it should show up in the unidentified ? section of devices.
4. Right click it and choose update driver.
5. Browse your disk(s) and find the directory holding your Fantom X drivers.

Hopefully it will find everything it needs and install itself for you.
So far it seems to be working for me, at least the MIDI over USB part..as I haven't tried accessing the memory or flash card yet.
